Please use the checklist below before submitting your Route Sheet to the vetters.
One of the biggest problems we have is route descriptions being too wordy – sometimes we can’t see the wood for the trees – even when a Challenger is walking across moorland! If you haven’t done so already please watch the ‘How to Fill in your Route Sheet’ video on the TGO Challenge YouTube channel and look at the examples at the bottom of the page for guidance.
Checklist
Start/End Points: Align with route description.
Daily Itinerary: This needs to be clear and concise so your vetter and the Coordinators can quickly ascertain your route. Aim for a maximum of 6 lines of text per day (sometimes a single line may be sufficient).
- Route Description:
- Only one Main route (escape routes from ridges or summits to FWAs are acceptable).
- Mainly use place names. Only use Grid References where needed for clarity.
- Avoid too many linking words such as “and”, “then”, “continue”. See examples below and YouTube video.
- Place names:
- Should only be from OS 1:50k maps.
- If a name only appears on an OS 1:25k map and there is no 1:50k name in the area, then add “(1:25)” after the place name.
- Grid References (GR):
- Use two prefix letters and only six figures (e.g. NH 068 312).
- Only use a GR in your Route Description when a place name is not available.
- Distance and Ascent:
- Required for all Main and FWA routes.
- Metric measurements only.
- FWAs:
- Ensure suitable FWAs are provided – see advice (including mandatory list) in the Event Details.
- Ensure each FWA (or section of multiday FWA) appears under the relevant day.
- Multiday FWAs have overnight halts and, if appropriate, links to/from the Main route.
- Overnight Halt Points:
- Towns/villages – name of place and establishment you intend to use for accommodation (if known)
- Wild camping – has a place name/general location and 6-figure GR with prefix letters (e.g. Loch Mhoicean NH 068 312).
Loch Ness Ferry Crossings: Indicate in the box provided whether you plan to use the Loch Ness crossing.
Phone-in Points: Minimum of 4 PIPs, which tally with Route Description. Start and Finish points cannot be used as PIPS.
To be decided (TBD) : All ‘TBD’ entries have been updated with the correct data prior to submitting the form.
